A digipak is a style of compact disc or DVD packaging and typically consist of a book-style way of opening; with one or more plastic trays to hold CD's or DVD's.
Digipaks became increasingly popular among record labels and recording artists from the early 2000's; as these were more practical and lightweight in comparison to vinyl.
The most used style of digipaks is when there is just one CD tray with one booklet on the corresponding side with information about the artist/band an example of this is in the picture above.
My storyboard does not completely correlate with my music video; this is down to trial and error of the different shots, as I drew these storyboards before I had begun editing my video. This is because of problems with synchronisation or I was not happy with the shots or the continuation of the shots.
Shot 1 – Sunlight Shot 2 – Laurence (the artist) beginning song – sitting on a bridge. I used this shot because this was the first location where we filmed. Shot 3 – Extreme close up of Laurence. Shot 4 – Skateboard. I chose to use this shot because I wanted to relate to the demographic audience. Shot 5 – Laurence sitting on hay bails. Idyllic scenery of the late summer. Shot 6 - Silhouette shot of Laurence playing with devil sticks. Medium shot. Shot 7 – Medium shot of Laurence walking away from the camera playing his guitar. Shot 8 - Extreme long shot of Laurence walking towards the camera. Shot 9 – Laurence standing at Buxton mill – references to nature because of the audience I am trying to achieve. Long shot. Shot 10 - Extreme close up of Laurence. Shot 11 – Long shot of Laurence playing with devil sticks. Shot 12 – Medium shot “ “. Shot 13 – Close up shot “ “. Shot 14 – Long shot of Laurence standing on hay bails. Shot 15 – Long shot of Laurence standing at Buxton Mill. Shot 16 – Return to another shot of Laurence sitting on the bridge at our first location stop. Shot 17 – High angle shot of Laurence standing. Shot 18 – Long shot of Laurence standing in the sea with his guitar. Shot 19 – Laurence running away from the camera, running down from the sand dunes and towards the sea. Shot 20 – Cross dissolve into a medium shot of Laurence playing his guitar – an intimate shot, so that the potential audience can feel somewhat a relationship. Shot 21 – High angle shot of Laurence standing on hay bails – including the hay bails into the frame shot gives another reference to nature. Shot 22 – Cross dissolve into a spinning medium shot of Laurence playing his guitar. Showing the summer landscape and the sand dunes in the background. Shot 23 – Skateboard on a half pipe. Again a relation to the demographic audience. Shot 24 – Ending with a slow motion, silhouette figure of Laurence playing with devil sticks. Medium shot.
The music video for Radioheads song creep. The entire music video is performance based which is similar to my music video however this music video is the band performing at a venue whereas my music video is my artist performing in different locations. With this band being the most critically acclaimed band; the use of close ups in this video is vital and close ups is what my music video lacks. Most of the attention is on Thom Yorke which I think they should have had more attention on the rest of the members if they are trying to sell the band with this video, however Thom Yorke is always the main focus in each of their videos and is a great front man. I like the use of the lighting as it works well with the song and the performance and emphasises the genre. I think that longer and more cuts to the audience would be more affective.
Because my artist is a mixture between acoustic, folk and alternative its difficult to find an actual conventional character for this.
I think that the sort of audience who my artist is aimed at is the kind of people who wear casual clothing, for example a plain t shirt or jumper with jeans/trousers/shorts I dont think that this type of audience care a lot about what they look like however they dont go too outrageous. I think that this audience like to think they are more 'hippy' or 'skater' rather than the other conventional tribes. I think that this audience like to go to festivals such as: Glastonbury or Hop Farm festival. I think that the acoustic and alternative fan are normally on the go. The folk fan is more likely to be some sort of vegetarian or vegan.
Hairstyles for folk, acoustic and alternative are not very important to the genre here are examples: This is the folk singer/musician Neil Young, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. He clearly has no interest in style and his hair is long and matted however this is normally how folk singers are recognised; for their hippy look.
Ian Curtis the songwriter and singer for the alternative band Joy division. His fashion is more rock based and his hair style is simple. Although he is more contemporary than Neil Young he still has no interest in the fashion of his era.
There are not really any typical aspects to the genres of my artist. I also think that folk, acoustic and alternative fans and artists do not show any generic aspects to show people which kind of genre music fan they are I think that the only way they show this is through their lifestyle choices.
While watching the x factor this year I noticed that this act is similar to my artist. He changed a commercial, dancey song into an acoustic song which I think is more affective this way. Initially I thought that this was similar to my artist because of the singing with the guitar, however looking back at this contestants audition/bootcamp audition I realised his style corresponds with my artist - sort of scruffy and wears a hat. Matt Cardle is one of the favourites to win x factor I think this is because his fashion and his appearence is diverse to his style of singing. This aspect is also similar with my artist.
Nick Drake An English folk singer-songwriter and musician. Nick Drake's public profile remained low before his death and it has only been since the mid 1980's when people realised how influential his music was/is. Who is their audience and how do they appeal to their audience? Nick Drakes audience are those of the 'hippie culture', and some are also likely to be alone and unhappy - the same position as what Drake was in while writing his songs as his lyrics reflected his emotions. Although since researching up on Nick Drake's fans a lot have said that when they are in that state of mind they listen to his albums to bring themselves back. Nick Drakes audience is more middle-aged working or middle class people rather than the younger generation. Nick Drake died long before he was recognised so he did not manage to land himself any big gigs. However, he did sign to island records and released his debut album "Five Leaves Left". There are now fansites made for Nick Drake - http://www.nickdrake.com/ Nick Drake was very secretive and no footage of him exists he was only ever captured in stills. This makes it hard to understand how he appealed to his audience or even if he appealed atall while most of Drakes lifetime he relied on word of mouth. Most musicians/singers appeal to their audience by their fashion, although Drake doesn't look like the typical 'star' this is how he appeared to gain fans with his unique style of clothing as he has somewhat been frozen in time there are still people today who dress as Nick Drake did. Lots of musicians respect Nick Drake for his inimitable way of producing his music for example his song River man is noted for its 5/4 time and use of prosody.
A Stranger Among Us Documentray - Nick Drake. Part 1
This is the first part of a documentary of Nick Drake.
Nick Drake didnt interact with people very much therefore he didnt have much of an audience. However, the fact that there is no footage of him makes people of this day in age more interested in him and interested in his life as to why he was so idle. In his song Fruit Tree his lyrics are "safe in your place deep in the earth, thats when they'll know what you were truly worth, forgotten while you're here"

Eels An American alternative band formed by the singer/songwriter Mark Everett, better known as E. Other members rotate frequently. Who is their audience and how do they appeal to them? The eels music is a mixture of alternative, rock and lo-fi. This gives them a wider range of audiences; from the 'indie' kind of style and the 'rock' kind of style. The eels correlate with their audience with their fashion which is generic for their type of genre - plain clothing, no bright colours, mostly dull colours like green, black, white, denim etc. The eels come across as the sort of 'lazy boy' type of people who smoke and drink and dont care about current issues, this is similar to their typical audience.
E interview on an Australian TV show. 2003. Part1.
This interview is very ironic and E is clearly being sarcastic with a lot of the things he says. I cant work out if its because he doesn't like the interviewer or he may have been told what to say, either way I think he plays it well by not grinning or smiling throughout. E from the eels is arrogant in himself, this may be the cause of his success as most successful people will agree with me that you have to be arrogant to be successful otherwise there is no place for you. For the younger viewers of this television programme who dont know who The Eels are, this can be very misleading and give a bad impression about the band, but to be honest; I dont think the eels care about this aspect as they have reliable fans and a lot of fans anyway.
This is the album cover of daisies of the galaxy 2000. It appears that none of the eels album covers actually show the band all together - a few just have E but most of them are more arty. This album cover seems to be the most colourful and the most illustrated one, this sort of reflects the songs from this album as they're more cheerful for example their most known one from this album is Mr. E's beautiful blues as it was featured on the film 'Road Trip'.
This is the latest cd cover for the eels (2010) for their album tomorrow morning. This album cover is rather tranquil and shows a more peaceful representation of their genre/songs. I really like this album cover and I think its affective. However it's not very generic but I think that works well.
What can you learn from this artist about how to appeal to their audience? The fact that E barley interacts with the audience at gigs and live shows makes it difficult to learn from the band, however in the long run it is mostly mainstream artists who like to interact with their audience at gigs. The eels do world wide tours and shows and have recently opened an official website for their fans http://www.eelstheband.com/ Their fans are clearly important to them.

Finley Quaye A British musician. Grew up influenced by jazz musicians such as Pete King and Ronnie Scott. He won the 1997 Mobo Award for best reggae act and the 1998 BRIT award for best male solo artist.Who is their audience and how do they appeal to their audience? Finley Quaye appeals to a multicultural audience. The obvious influences are from reggae and acoustic folk. These genres together give a unique and interesting sound that is easily distinguished. The combination of folk and reggae broadens his potential audience as each are very different in style but share various musical similarities such as the chilled tempo and use of samples and effects. Finley appeals to his audience by maintainig a contemporary image. He also follows the trend of successfull mainstream musicians as he conforms to the expectations of a typical pop star.
How do they interact with their audience? Finley Quaye interacts with his audience with the lyrics he sings which are mostly about nature and love; they are things that all kinds of people of all ages can connect with. Finley Quaye doesn't have a fan site or an official website as of yet. However he is currently touring the UK and is scheduled to do many festivals through the summer.
CD Covers Maverick a strike 1997. This was the album that made Finley Quaye. His first album. The front cover is a close up of his own face, the font is done in a digital kind of style which enhances the fact that he's a new addition to the music scene.
Finley Quayes second album Vanguard. Again a picture of himself on the front cover. Looks as though he is really trying to sell himself as an artist. The font looks almost psychedellic - opposite to his style of music.
Much more than much love (2004). The whole cd cover is simple, which I think is affective. However I think that this cover looks more like a single cd cover rather than an album cover.
Finley Quaye - Even After All
Finley Quayes music video for his song Even after all. Lots of references to nature as the seasons turn while he maintains sitting on the bench. The video shows the artist throughout this shows how Finley Quaye is trying to make it as a 'popstar'. Many close up shots of his face and close up shots of parts of his body. The black and white effect make the video authentic and sort of dream like with cuts to rain drops and leaves flying in slow motion. The video begins and ends in the same place which I also think is very affective.

This is the camera I used for shooting my music video. It's a Sony Handycam. The quality of the camera isn't great but it's good for landscape shooting. It also picks up the diegetic sound while filming - this is good for future use in the video, for example in my video Im keeping the sound of the wind and the sea in parts of my video.
I asked Laurence to wear casual clothing. As this resembles his genre. Originally I wanted a plain t shirt for him to wear as I thought i didnt want to draw much attention to his clothing as it wasnt the main feature of my music video. I began thinking that blue was the best option because it gives the impression that the artist is quirky or energetic which i think the artist has plenty of. However, on the day of the shoot he came wearing a grey t shirt with "O'niell" written on it. In the end this t shirt worked out well because of the audience he attracts (surfers, campers, festival go-ers).
I asked Laurence if he could wear green trousers, this was because I think that the colour green reflects someone who is laid back and this goes with the genre and the song itself. I wanted Laurence to wear trousers so he would look sophisticated. I also think shorts or an alternative garment would look effortless and carelessc.
These shoes are very similar to the ones Laurence was wearing on the shoot. As i said before I wanted his appearence to be as casual as everyday wear so his audience could familiarise themselves with him. The fact that they are black draw no attention to them which i thought was a good addition because they could be distracting if they were a colour.
Janis Joplin's album cover isn't very generic to her music but i really like the psychedellic writing. This is something I have considered for my album cover. I also like that the picture is her looking like a queen, sitting on a throne with glamorous clothing and throws around her. This album cover isn't like the normal folk album covers as they normally have some sort of reference to the music.
The eels have some of my favourite album covers. This one being one of them; there is something about kid art which i really like and it being on the front of an album cover gives it a peaceful kind of look.
I have thought about drawing something for my album cover too, maybe not kid art but something similar; i like the idea of abstract art sort of like picasso.
This is another one of the eels album covers, this one called 'beautiful freak'. I like the idea of the young girl with the psychedellic eyes. and that its in black and white - the only part that isn't in black and white are the words 'eels' which i find effective.
This album cover is very famous for this genre. It's known as 'the sublime sun' I really like this album cover and its most probably my favourite.
I think that this album cover only suits bands or artists that are alternative or ska. This sort of album cover does not suit the type of genre that my artist is, however I really like the idea and the image.
Neil Young's album cover is the kind of album cover I would use for my artist. As i said before I really like drawings for an album cover and this one is very affective, i like the bright colours and the abstract patterns at the bottom of the cover. The font is simple and bold which contradicts the rest of the image. In my opinon this is the most suitable for the genre of my artist.
Nick Drake 'Pink Moon' album cover is many different objects floating around, it takes a while to work out what the objects are and this is what I like about this cover. Its not very eye catching and it doesn't really mean anything but thats why its so affective. With Nick Drake being as modest as he was - this suits his type of music.
This music video was what I was somewhat basing my music video on. I like the middle-of-the-summer impression of the video and that the shots dont look professional; as if it was done on a hand held camera. There are many landscape shots which is what i was trying to achieve from the beach, hay bails, the river and the mill. When i first saw this music video really liked the silhouette shots of the artist which is also what I tried with my artist on the sand dunes. Close up shots of different parts of the artist's body, for example: feet tapping or fingers tapping to the beat of his song is also something that i really liked about this video and i think it works very affectivley. I used skateboarders in my video which is similar to this one, i think it works well if it is slowed down into slow motion and the skateboarders land/perform their tricks to the beat. Unlike my video this video is slowed down the entire way through, I thought about doing this however my song is a bit faster than this one so the slow motion wouldn't work as well. My video lacks other people as at the moment i only have two people in it, I think this puts more emphasise and focus on the artist. In this video Jason Mraz is dressed in casual clothing and is wearing a hat, it looks as if he is on holiday - this is what i was trying to attain with my artist, I asked him to wear impromptu clothing (t-shirt and everyday trousers) to capture the feel of the late summer; my artist also wore a hat and with that i asked him to take it off now and then and use it as a prop by throwing it and playing with it. The Jason Mraz video is very much similar to mine in the way that there is no strict narrative structure to it, it is just shots of the artist (alomost like a day in the life) and his friends.
This is one of my favourite music videos. I really like the idea of the floating band. There is no diegetic sounds in the video, this makes it seem even more as if it is a dream or a fanstasy; along with the black and white effect. Lots of close up and high angle shots of the band make them look over powering, in addition to the fact that they are all wearing black. I really like the ending to this music video as they all stop floating and walk out of the passage way and into the street. The genre of the eels (alternative) has elements of the same genre of my artist as it is quite tranquil; with this song by the eels is loosely alternative and not the typical alternative rock song that you would expect. The costumes of the band is casual/informal which is the same costumes as my artist is wearing on my music video.
Folk music is a term for musical folklore and is, as the name implies, the music of the people.
Originated in the 19th century however some of the earliest folk songs rose from slave fields. Folk is considered more of a tradition than entertainment.
Folk music has been the music of the working class. Folk songs range in subject matter from war, civil rights, work, economic hardship and love.
The 20th century brought folk music back as workers struggled and struck for child labor laws and the eight-hour working day. Workers would gather round in churches, halls and living rooms to learn songs which helped them through the rough work environment; these songs described hardship but were however full of hope.
In the 1960's folk music became incresingly more popular with the likes of artists such as: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Niel Young whose work dealt with anything from love, war, work and play.
The folk singers work resonates with people of all walks of life and their legacy is astounding.
The first single released from their album 'Rhythm And Stealth'. The genre is established as the music video begins the electronic genre is introduced by low angle shots of tall buildings in New York City which provide the urban sentiment of the video, this is accompanied of shots of the hustle and bustle of the streets of New York. The first shot of the actor illustrates a dark, creepy side walk where he is almost disguised into the shadows. As the video continues there are many point of view shots of the actor which show a delusional outlook. The man struggles across the streets with white people over looking and not helping the man in desperate need. This may connote the struggle of black people in this day in age as he slowly diminshes while making his way around the city. The lyrics "Zulu nation here to stay" and "time to clear the floor to let the zulus rock" give an interpretation that the people of the African race are proud of their heritage and they are 'here to stay'. Throughout the video the people of the city seem to treat the main actor as if he was some sort of animal; running away from him, pointing and avoiding him. This shows a great insight to the minds of those who are not what social policies tell us we have to look like, act like and think like.
The time of tribes is now! “Today, social existence is conducted through fragmented tribal groupings, organized around the catchwords, brand-names and sound-bites of consumer culture”. The proliferation of the digital media has granted people the ability to divulge in thousands of media forms thus giving people the flexibility of media to join their perfect niche audience. “Modern tribes are not permanent groups, but shifting and always changing. Membership of these tribes is not permanent”, due to the fluidity of the technology and the convergence of different Medias. “Urban tribes are micro groups of people who share common interests in metropolitan areas” this is because social new to working sites grants people the ability to find people of similar interests to locate each other and arrange meetings. Creating hundreds of small independent groups of people sharing a common interest.
I thought this location was perfect for my music video.
This was the first place we went to when shooting for my video, I really like this bridge because its somewhat tranquil.
I really liked this location because of the mill. Our initial idea was for Laurence to stand in the water but when we got there the water was too deep so we settled with the platform next to the mill.
I chose this location becuase the theme i was kind of going for in my music video was a some sort of 'freedom' feeling. The only thing i think that could make this scene better was if the sun was out to make the video look summery. If i could do this shot again i would ask laurence to stand in another place at the mill so i could get more angles and shot types.
This is one of my favourite locations. We were never planning on filming here, we found this location when we were on our way to the beach. No one was around so we thought it was perfect for filming.
Even though the sun isn't out the clouds make the shot/scene even better. I like that theres a large block of clouds; then just at teh tip of the trees there is blue sky. The view from the top of the hay bails makes the artist look tiny compared to the vast landscape.
The beach was our last location we went to.
I chose this location because theres always people there and it looks very summery. I asked Laurence to run around and express himself a few times so i could get some natural shots of the artist.
Give up your job you know you work too hard, tell all your mates you know you missed school and all the mistakes that never meant too much harm. Back to the facts you're only distracted give all you got it all comes in practice, savour the taste as it melts your fun.
Minimal interest in your game undress me with your eyes thats all that you come with to me to find I think you daydream too much. Never will I seem to be thinking you out of mind its all that your linked with. Slippers and misfits its all that you sync with now.
Too much x4 will slow you down this time scrolling your way up is never your way down Too much x4 will hit the ground with disgust scrolling your way up is never your way out
Wondering to see all your mates have made an entire acoustic band out of your place upside down bins and wooden spoons make good drums. shake pasta pots they make good maracas that type of fun puts tights in your ladders to me it seems you day dream too much.
Laurence Parkin, singer/songwriter based in Norwich. Keen to share his blend of acoustic, popular melodies with a comical twist. Does cover versions of well-known bands/songs, however he is mostly known for his own unique material and his own style. The chosen song 'Too Much' is one written and sung by himself.
This video by Bob Dylan has a clear link from visuals to lyrics. The video is simple yet effective.
Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
I think this a good idea for a music video because it shows the lyrics infront of you. A lot of controversy follws this video as this is the year Bob Dylan 'went electric'.
This video was the first 'modern' promotional film clips, which was later known as a music video. 'The Rolling Stone' magazine ranked it 7th in the list of 'Top 100 Music Videos'. There are deliberate misspellings and puns throughout the clip for example when the lyrics say "eleven dollar bills" the card says "twenty dollar bills".
Sublime: Sublime was an American reggae fusion band from Long Beach, California. The band formed in 1988 with the most recognisable three man line up which consisted of Bradley Nowell (Vocals, Guitar) Bud Gaugh (Drums, Percussion) and Eric Wilson (Bass Guitar). In 1996 Sublime immediatley split up after Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose. Today, Sublime are known for their comical twist in their lyrics which is similar to the artist I have chosen for my music video. I also find their music videos inspiring as it mostly consists of some sort of story line.
Sublime - Date Rape
I like that in this video the story is filmed in colour with clips back to the band who are performing this song in black and white, this shows that there is a message in this song. The video shows visual to lyrics as the actions done by the characters is what the lyrics are. The band are also performing and singing in time with the music.
I have chosen alternative/acoustic for my genre for my music video. From researching the two genres i have realised that the genre 'Alternative' has a bit more of a rock style to their music and 'Acoustic' is more peaceful however many acoustic bands come off as more 'geeky' and 'hippy' to the rest of the genres.
